What is NEET?

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test commonly known as NEET is organized by the NTA (National testing Agency) once in a year. It is the only national level medical entrance exam.

National Eligibility Entrance Test is the gateway to several top-notch medical and dental colleges at the undergraduate level. It is organized for providing admission in MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BSMS, BUMS, and BHMS Courses offered by all Indian Medical colleges.

In order to get admission in most medical courses abroad, candidates have to qualify the NEET UG exam, else their medical degree will not be recognized in India.

Eligibility and Qualifications for MBBS and BDS Course

  • He/she has completed 17 years of age at the time of admission or will complete that age on or before 31 December of the year of his/her admission to the first year of the Undergraduate Medical Course.
  • Indian Citizens/ Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) intending to pursue Undergraduate Medical Courses in a foreign Medical/ Dental Institute also need to qualify for NEET (UG).

Criteria for NRIs:

  • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), and Foreign Nationals are eligible for admission in Medical /Dental Colleges subject to rules and regulations framed by the respective State Governments, Institutions, and the Government of India, as the case may be.
  • The NRI and OCI Applicants/Candidates have to upload a Certificate from the concerned Indian Diplomatic Mission in the country of their residence in support of their claim as an NRI/OCI Candidate, along with their online Application Form for NEET (UG) and retain the original of such document for producing it at the time of Counselling / Admission to the Courses covered under NEET (UG).
  • Similarly, a foreign applicant for NEET (UG) shall also upload Documentary Proof (e.g. relevant pages of a valid passport or a Certificate from the Competent Authority in the country of his/her nationality regarding his/her citizenship status) in support of his/her Nationality, along with online Application Form. 

Mode of Examination

NEET (UG) is a Pen & Paper-based Test, to be answered on the specially designed machine gradable OMR sheet using Ball Point Pen provided at the Centre. Moreover tampering with the OMR at any stage will lead to debarring of the candidature for 3 years.

Duration of Test

The duration of the test would be three (03) hours and 20 minutes.

Pattern of the Test

 The Test pattern of NEET (UG) comprises four Subjects – Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. Each subject will consist of two sections. Section A will consist of 35 Questions and Section B will have 15 Questions, out of these 15 Questions, candidates can choose to attempt any 10 Questions. So, the total number of questions and utilization of time will remain the same.

Important Points to Note:

(a) For Section A (MCQs):

To answer a question, the candidates need to choose one option corresponding to the correct answer or the most appropriate answer.

  • Correct answer or the most appropriate answer: Four marks (+4)
  • Any incorrect option marked will be given minus one mark (-1).
  • Unanswered/Marked for Review will be given no mark (0).
  • If more than one option is found to be correct then Four marks (+4) will be awarded to only those who have marked any of the correct options.
  • If all options are found to be correct then Four marks (+4) will be awarded to all those who have attempted the question.

(b) For Section B (MCQs):

Candidates need to attempt any 10 Questions out of 15 Questions given. In the event of a candidate has attempted more than 10 questions, only the first 10 attempted questions will be considered for evaluation. There will also be negative marking for Section B. Marking will be similar as Section A.

Here are few tips for you to crack the NEET exam with ease and accuracy.

  • You should always create a study schedule well in advance to give equal time for all subjects.
  • Do not over stress yourself with long hours of study. Take intervals for better concentration.
  • Be well aware of the officially prescribed syllabus and prepare from it.
  • Note that CBSE Board Exam and NEET Exam carry completely different exam pattern and type of questions. Just by preparing for CBSE, you will not end up acing NEET.
  • NEET aspirants must focus actively on their Physics and Chemistry too. Many a times, NEET aspirants tend to focus most of their energy on Biology portions and ignore Phy and Chem. This is a very poor strategy and adequate time must be given to the requirements of all subjects.
  • Continually identify your weak areas in all subjects and address those gaps.
  • Practice as many previous years question paper as you can
  • Avoid junk food, take good care of your health and stay fit.
